Evidence hash methodology

How photo evidence is prepared and fingerprinted when a hash can be computed.

Approach

Photos are resized to a maximum of 1600 pixels and saved as JPEG. A SHA-256 hash is computed from those saved photo bytes only when the browser can compute it; if it is unavailable or fails, the record says so.

Documents and non-photo events are not necessarily hashed.

Limits

When available, SHA-256 records a fingerprint of the exact stored photo bytes. Comparing those bytes with the recorded hash can confirm that they match. The database status does not independently verify the image.

Capture or selection time comes from the device. Location and accuracy are optional device-provided data; denied or unavailable location is not claimed as captured. A hash does not prove the original capture time, location, who took the photo, or authenticity. Failed or unavailable hashing is shown honestly, without a fabricated SHA-256 value.
